Europe is not an arid continent, but water supplies are now a concern for almost half of the EU population.
The overall use of water resources can be considered sustainable in the long-term in most of Europe except for some countries. But, as a result of climate change, droughts and water scarcity are no longer rare or extreme events in Europe. According to the European Environmental Agency, about 20 % of the European territory and 30 % of Europeans are affected by water stress during an average year.
